HOW TO CHOOSE A KAYAK OR CANOE |

If you are new to the sport the choice of craft can appear a little daunting, so to focus your mind on what type of equipment you need, we suggest you refer to the questions and answers below:
Questions:
Q1: Where should I buy from?
A1: The key thing here is to remember that we are not buying DVDs, CDs or books but specialist equipment. We would therefore strongly recommend that you never buy kit like boats, buoyancy aids, life jackets, paddles, wet suits, neoprene shoes, cags, and thermals over the internet. This is because it is essential from a safety perspective that all this kit fits properly and is suited to you. So don't be afraid to pop into your local specialist shop and get sound advice, that's what they are there for.
Q2: As a beginner, how do I find out what type of canoeing I may be interested taking up?
A2: There is a wide choice of canoeing disciplines. The best way to find out what type of canoeing suits you, is to visit your local SPECIALIST retailer and spend some time discussing the options. A good shop should have a wide selection of boats for you to view. The staff should be very knowledgeable on the different types of canoeing. If you are not sure whether you are going to take to the sport, it is a good idea to book on a one day beginners course which will give you a good feel for what the sport is all about. The course should be available through your local shop, but make sure that the instructor(s) are fully qualified BCU Coaches.
Q3: How do I make sure that my chosen boat will be comfortable for me?
A3: Buying a boat is like buying a pair of shoes. It has got to fit you properly, and the only way to find out whether it does is to try it on for size! So visit your local shop and spend some time sitting in the boat of your choice to make sure you will be comfortable in it. Good shops will even provide you with a coffee whilst you do this! N.B. never buy a boat without having sat in it first.
Q4: How much should I spend?
A4: Buying a boat should be thought of as an investment in having fun! The great thing about canoeing/kaykaing is that once you have purchased the equipment, going paddling is usually very inexpensive. Buy the best you can afford, and make sure that the boat you purchase will both cater for your abilities now and in six months time. If you are looking at package deals, it is essential that you visit the shop, handle and try on the kit so you can ensure that you are buying good quality products that fit and suit your needs. Good shops will offer the flexibility to upgrade the kit you purchase if you wish, and all you should have to do is to pay any difference in price.
